A Culture of Inclusion
Dr. Joe Petner, principal of Haggerty Elementary School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has been on the forefront of inclusion for decades. “I see the work of inclusion as probably the last frontier of desegregation,” Petner says. Marlene Orellana sought out Haggerty for her son, Nathaniel, who has autism. “As soon as I walked in through the door with my husband,” she said, “we said ‘this is it.’ It feels like home.”
